Microsoft Recommendations About Hard Drive:

Microsoft itself recommends to its users that install Windows 8 (x86) on a partition that has at least 16 GB free space. The recommended free disk space for 64-bit Windows 8 installation is said to be 20 GB. Sadly, this free space that is recommended  would not be enough if you are looking forward to install multiple large programs for instance Microsoft Office, Photoshop, and games.

A brand new install of Windows 8 (x86) takes up to around 10.6 GB of disk space on a machine that has 2 GB of RAM, and Windows 8 (x64) requires minimum of around 13 GB of free space.

Our Recommendations About Hard Drive:

If you are mainly netbook/notebook user, especially for web surfing and you are not planning to install too many programs, form a partition that has at least 20 GB (24 GB for x64 installation) of free disk space.

The users who are planning to install Office software, digital media editing applications and games are required to create partition that has minimum of 50 GB of free space. If you have enough free space available on hard disk, then you are free to create a partition with at least 70 GB of free space and it would not be a bad idea.

The Hardcore gamers and users who are planning to install hundreds of software that should create a partition that contains 100 GB of free space.
